Despite a backlash against so called “flock cams,” their use is being defended locally by law enforcement. The defense comes in the face of public pressure, and their removal in some jurisdictions.
Vincennes Police Chief Jon Hillenbrand is among those defending the general plate scanners on various roadways. He says the cameras’ only purpose is to read license plates. Hillenbrand also defends the plate readers as helpful to catch violations of various state laws.
The “flock cams” are used by Vincennes City, Knox County, and Indiana State Police. Also, both county and state units have front-mounted license plate scanners that can be used when following suspicious vehicles.
