Joan E. “Herzberger” Cress, who was born on April 20, 1955, in Norfolk, Virginia, and passed away on October 2, 2026, in Bicknell, Indiana, lived a life marked by devotion to her family, faith, and the quiet strength she brought to those around her.
She was the daughter of Clifford T. and Helen D. “Wilkinson” Herzberger and grew up with the values of kindness, perseverance, and responsibility that would guide her throughout her life. Joan graduated from Burges High School in El Paso, Texas, and later continued her education by earning her Associate’s Degree from Vincennes University. Her commitment to learning reflected the same determination she carried into every part of her life.
On October 26, 1976, in El Paso, Texas, Joan married the love of her life, John E. Cress Sr. Together they built a home centered on love, loyalty, and family. She devoted herself to her role as a homemaker, where her care and attention helped create a warm and welcoming household for those she loved. Her life was enriched by the many moments she shared with her husband and children, and she took great pride in the family she helped nurture.
Joan was a faithful member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where those who worshiped alongside her appreciated her presence and spirit. Her faith was central to her life and provided comfort, guidance, and strength through the years. She will be remembered for the grace with which she carried herself and for the sincerity of her devotion to both her church and her loved ones.
She is survived by her children, Terrie E. “Cress” Lewis-Burden of Bruceville, Indiana, and John E. Cress Jr. of Augusta, Georgia; her grandchildren, John James Lewis, Erice Blade Lewis, and George Benjamin Cress; and her sister, Cheryl A. Herzberger. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Cress Sr; her parents, Clifford T. and Helen D. “Wilkinson” Herzberger; her brother, William T. Herzberger; and her nephew, Joshua Eric Herzberger.
Those who knew Joan will remember her as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose life was defined by steadfast care and quiet dignity. Her family was the center of her world, and her legacy will live on in the memories, values, and love she passed down to those who survive her. Though she will be deeply missed, her life stands as a lasting testament to devotion, faith, and the enduring bonds of family.
