Ted Hazel, age 77, of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away on July 27, 2026. He was born on January 21, 1949, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and lived a life marked by service, hard work, and devotion to his family.
Ted served his country honorably in the U.S. Army in Vietnam with the 716th Military Police and worked for the Provost Marshal. He served as Spec. 4 Sergeant and received many awards during his service, including Soldier of the Month and Expert Marksmanship, and was chosen as an escort for the contestants to the Miss America Pageant. Following his military service, he built a career in real estate and later worked in roofing and construction. He approached each role with determination and integrity, earning the respect of coworkers, clients, and friends alike.
Education was important to Ted, and he was proud to have received his Master’s Degree from Indiana University. He valued learning throughout his life and carried that curiosity into many of his interests. He loved to read and was a true history buff, always eager to learn more about the past and share what he discovered with others. He also enjoyed cutting down trees, a task that suited his hands-on nature and appreciation for hard work.
Ted was blessed with many accomplishments and interests beyond his career. He received his pilot’s license and scuba certification, both of which reflected his adventurous spirit and willingness to embrace new experiences. He also loved animals and found joy in their companionship. Ted was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Elks, organizations that connected him with fellow veterans and friends who shared his values and sense of camaraderie.
On February 14, 2007, Ted married his wife, Pam “Daugherty” Hazel. Their marriage was a source of happiness and companionship, and together they shared many meaningful years. He is survived by his wife, Pam Hazel; his step-children, Tiffanie Bailey (Chris), and Mandie McDonald (Michael); his nine grandchildren, Blake Mincey, Alexis Bailey, Jaxson Bailey, Brayvin and Kenna BeDell, Braylee Chanley, Logan and Addy Chanley, and Easton “Jimmy Johnson” Chanley; his two great-grandchildren, Arlo Dail and Greyson Dail, and one great-grandchild on the way; and his sister and three brothers.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Flynn, and by his mother and step-father, Virginia “Robinette” Hazel and Thomas Hazel. Ted’s family and friends will remember him for his steady presence, his sense of adventure, and the many ways he showed care for those around him. His memory will remain a lasting comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
There will be a visitation held on Saturday, August 1st, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Vincennes Chapel. A service will follow at 5:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Brent Kramer. Memorial donations may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
