John Ausman Newkirk, beloved father, brother, grandfather and uncle, passed away on August 22, 2026 at 12:53 p.m. at the age of 60 with family at his side. John was born on August 21, 1966 in the country outside of Sandborn, Indiana to Eugene and Deloris Eloise (Ausman) (Cone) Newkirk. He grew up in Sandborn and Edwardsport, Indiana with his siblings: Mick, Jeanne, Judy and James. John graduated from North Knox High School in 1984 and enjoyed his time there performing with the NKHS Band then later attended Vincennes University.
John is survived by his children: Nathanael M. Newkirk of Vine Grove, Kentucky, Dustin A. Newkirk of Linton, Indianaand Kaitlan McGlone of Bicknell, Indiana, along with 2 grandchildren. John is also survived by his siblings: Jeanne A. Fields of Franklin, Indiana, Judy (Brett) Reynolds of Freelandville, Indiana and James (Jeanna) Newkirk of Edwardsport, Indiana.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Michael J. “Mick” Cone of Freelandville, Indiana.
John was a past member of the Dugger Masonic Lodge #721. John was also a past 7th District Commander and a past Squadron 192 Commander of the Sons of American Legion. John was a talented trumpet player and played taps at many military funerals and Memorial & Veterans Day ceremonies.
John was a cross-country truck/delivery driver and enjoyed his travels and the people he met along the way. John was a member of Bassmaster and loved to fish.
John was known for his love of music and was a talented performer/singer who could play any instrument put in his hands. Any time John walked in with his guitar, there was a good time to be had. He was an amazing person who will be missed.
There will be a Celebration of Life to be held on September 6, 2026 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Edwardsport Fire Station Community Building. John’s inurnment will be at Prairie Chapel Cemetery in Lyons, Indiana immediately following the Celebration of Life. Arrangements for John are being handled by Fredrick & Son McClure-Utt Funeral Homes & Crematory.
