Thomas Arthur Hendricks, known to many as Tom, passed away on August 5, 2026, in Plainville, Indiana, at the age of 71. Tom was born on September 19, 1954, in Martinsville, Indiana, to a large family; his parents, John and Ida May “Mitchell” Hendricks, along with his seven siblings, made up much of his early life.
Tom graduated from high school and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Marines, a chapter of his life that reflected the patriotism and sense of duty he carried with him always. After his military service, he built a long career, retiring as a semi-truck driver and also working in construction, earning the respect of those who knew him for his strong work ethic and dependable nature.
Tom was a true survivalist in every sense of the word. He had a remarkable ability to make anything work and could live anywhere off of anything. He took pride in being resourceful and practical, and he approached life with a hands-on spirit that served him well in every season. He loved being outdoors and in nature, and he found joy in projects, working with his hands, and staying busy. Fishing and hunting were among his favorite pastimes, and he especially cherished the time he spent in the quiet beauty of the outdoors.
He was also deeply proud of his patriotism and carried a strong respect for his country and community throughout his life. Tom enjoyed being around the Amish community and valued the time he spent with them. He also loved teaching children and showing them the world, sharing his knowledge, stories, and appreciation for life in a way that left a lasting impression on younger generations. His presence was steady, his words were honest, and his influence was felt by many.
Tom was a member of the VFW and the American Legion, organizations that reflected his service, loyalty, and lifelong connection to fellow veterans. He valued fellowship and the bonds formed through shared experience, and he remained proud of the life he built through dedication and perseverance.
He is survived by his daughter, Bobbi Black; his granddaughter, Allison Haines; his siblings, John D., Charles “Chuck,” David, Jim, Kenneth, and Inez; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jane.
Tom will be remembered for his strength, his love of the outdoors, and the steady example he set for others. He lived life on his own terms, with grit and a deep appreciation for family, service, and hard work. His memory will remain a source of comfort and pride to all who knew and loved him.
