Shirley M. Steadman, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on December 30, 2025, at the age of 70. Born on July 7, 1955, in Washington, IN, Shirley’s early life was spent in the close-knit community where she graduated from Washington Catholic High School and later settled in Loogootee, IN, a place she happily called home.
Throughout her years, Shirley’s heart was firmly anchored in the joys of family. She leaves behind her loving children, Richard Auberry (Amy), Michelle Auberry, and Rachael Auberry. Her memory will continue to guide her seven grandchildren, Damien, Ryan, Brannon, Caleb, Makenna, Mason, and Carson, as well as her cherished two great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy into her life. Shirley also remained closely connected to her siblings, William Baker Jr. (Janet), James R. Baker (Jackie), Pamela Baker-Auberry (Kenny), and Patrick J. Baker Sr., and an abundance of nieces and nephews, all of whom will remember her with great affection and profound respect. Her parents, William E. and Nellie L. “Dinkens” Baker, preceded her in death and have now welcomed her into eternal peace.
As a homemaker, Shirley’s vocation was the well-being and happiness of her family. Her home was not just a physical structure but a sanctuary of warmth, comfort, and unconditional love. Everyone who entered was met with an open heart and an open door, a testament to Shirley’s nurturing spirit.
An ardent fan of NASCAR, Shirley’s enthusiasm for the sport was evident in her extensive collection of memorabilia, especially anything related to her favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. When not immersed in the racing world, Shirley found serenity in the art of crocheting and sewing. Her intricate patterns and designs are keepsakes that will be treasured by friends and family alike.
Shirley’s love for her family was unrivaled. She celebrated their triumphs, provided solace during times of strife, and imparted wisdom that will continue to guide them for generations to come. Her memory will live on in every shared story, every moment of laughter around the kitchen table, and every stitch of her handcrafted treasures.
Shirley M. Steadman lived her life with joy, dedication, and love that will remain a light for those she has left behind. Her family will carry forward the legacy of her kindred spirit, boundless affection, and the simple contentment she found in living a life deeply connected to those she cherished.
