Lawrence “June” Hess Jr., a steadfast pillar of the Vincennes community, passed away on October 5, 2025, at the age of 97, in his hometown. He was born on May 5, 1928, in Vincennes, Indiana, to Lawrence Hess Sr. and Marceline “Mouzin” Hess. He grew up embodying the values of hard work, dedication, and service, which he carried with him throughout his life.
In the warmth of a summer’s beginning, on June 7, 1949, Lawrence married his beloved wife, Betty Jo “Cardinal” Hess, at the St. Vincent de Paul Parish. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, during which they were blessed with a bountiful family. Together, they raised their children Ronald, Michael, Debra, Steve, Janice, Karen, Jan, and Linda, who along with their spouses and Lawrence’s sister Marjorie and her husband Bob, fondly remember his guidance and gentle strength.
After graduating from high school, Lawrence paved a diverse career path, first working at Bierhause and Sons, then Blackford Glass, and ultimately, as a farmer and self-employed truck driver. He took immense pride in his work and the responsibilities that came with it. Lawrence’s commitment to his community shone through his involvement with several organizations. He served as a board member of the Production Credit Association and a committeeman for the Farm Service Agency of Knox County, reflecting his dedication to the agricultural community. His contributions earned him the Knox County Conservation Farmer of the Year award.
Lawrence’s life was not solely defined by work. His passions included trucking— a testament to his enduring spirit of adventure. He delighted in watching his grandchildren’s sports games, showcasing the love and pride he held for his extended family. His social nature found joy in going on tour buses with friends, an expression of his lifelong affinity for camaraderie and travel. Above all, he was known for his gracious habit of helping his neighbors along with his great sense of humor. As a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Francis Xavier Parish, his devotion to his faith was evident in his actions and his sense of community.
Lawrence “June” Hess Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love and loyalty. He is predeceased by his wife of seventy years, Betty; his parents, Marceline Mouzin Hess and Lawrence Hess Sr; a daughter, Janice Hess; Paul & Patty Hess, Jim & Edna Hess, Jane & Fred Pulley, Tom & Jean Bilskie, Shirley & Dale Wagoner, Rosemary & George Kaiser & Jim & Rosemary Cardinal. He is survived by his loving children; Ronald Hess of Paoli, Michael Hess of Flat Rock, Debra Abel (Roger) of Vincennes, Steve Hess of Vincennes, Karen Hazelman of New Castle, Jan Topmiller, (Pat) of Indianapolis, and Linda Bezy (Mike) of Vincennes; eighteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, & 1 great-great grandchild, his sister Marjorie Hill (Bob), of Princeton. who together with countless friends and community members, will remember him with immense fondness and deep respect.

There will be a visitation on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, 313 Church St., Vincennes Chapel from 4 to 7 P.M. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist’s Catholic Church, officiated by Father Tony Ernst and nephew, Father Gary Kaiser.
