The Knox County Council is starting the first of four days of budget hearings today, to slot 22 million dollars into its various 2026 accounts The hearings will run through Thursday. Traditionally, County Council members will take the first two days to hear various department budget requests, and then last two to set the actual budgets for the coming year. After those budgets are approved, they will then be reviewed by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance for final approval.
This year also marks the final budget to be set before various property tax cuts take place across Indiana. The Indiana Legislature approved those reductions for the current tax year. The hearings themselves will be held in the Elihu Stout building at Seventh and Main Streets. The structure is the former home to the Vincennes Sun-Commercial.
