Municipal and county governments across Indiana are still making plans to do what they can with somewhat less property tax revenue. The tax relief is courtesy of the signing into law of Senate Bill 1—the property tax cut bill.
Knox County Commissioner T-J Brink understands the need for tax relief—but also wants state government to do its part too, In recent documents, state agencies will have to do just that, with almost all government departments having to cut at least five percent from their budgets. One thing local governments can do is pass an expanded local income tax—but Brink says one group—local schools—will miss out on that increase.
The State of Indiana did add small increases to school funding. However, schools are also funded in part by property taxes; those are based on the assessed property value of parcels of land in their districts.
