The Indiana Department of Transportation is trying to deal with its own budgeting realities in the latest state financial figures. INDOT is working with the state on ways to gain revenue from the growing number of electric vehicles on state roadways.
INDOT is funded in large part from the state’s gasoline taxes—which is bypassed by electric vehicles, since they aren’t powered by gas. However, INDOT spokesman Gary Bryan says more fuel-efficient vehicles cut into their tax revenues as well. Bryan also reminds everyone that is one rason they are seeing less expesive alternatives to treat state highways at times.
INDOT officials are working with state lawmakers and the Governor’s office to find workable solutions to help them help the state’s roads.
