Della Mae Strate, age 87, a lifelong resident of Vincennes, IN, passed away on February 15, 2026, in her hometown. Born on March 5, 1938, to the late Floyd and Irene “Huffer” McCormick, Della cultivated a life that was a testament to her kindness and enduring spirit.
Della graduated from the local high school, where she was rooted in her community from a young age. She soon found love and married Max Strate Sr., who was the cornerstone of her life until his passing. Della’s working years were spent dedicated to the Brown Shoe Factory, and following her time there, she found joy and purpose in providing childcare, nurturing many children with her love and patience.
Della was an adept quilter and knitter, sharing her handmade treasures with family and friends. These creations are lasting emblems of her artistic talent and generous heart. Strong in her devotion, she was a longstanding member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where her faith was an integral part of her existence, providing her with comfort and community throughout her life.
Della’s legacy is cherished by her loving family. She is survived by her son, Max Strate Jr. and her daughter-in-law, Danetta Strate, of Sullivan, IN; her adored grandchildren, Chasity Strate, Jordan Strate, and Virginia “Jenny” Strate, who will continue to honor her memory by living the values she taught them. Her brother-in-law, John Lowe of Florida, also survives her, along with a host of friends at Gentle Care who felt the warm embrace of her friendship. Della was reunited in passing with her beloved husband, Max Strate Sr., her parents, Floyd and Irene McCormick, her brother, Paul McCormick, and her sister, Elizabeth “Bet” Schatz.
In her life, Della Mae Strate exemplified compassion, integrity, and the quiet strength that comes from a life well-lived and rooted in community and faith.
