Robert Niles Grigsby, born on January 23, 1934, in Bruceville, Indiana, passed away at the age of 92, with his devoted wife of 70 years by his side in Freelandville, Indiana, on February 14, 2026. Robert spent his many years of life enriching those around him with his loving spirit and the joy he found in the simple pleasures of life.
A proud veteran, Robert served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. While Korea impacted and shaped his life and values throughout his career. He also traveled to Japan, Scotland, Guam and the Philippines, inspecting Cryptologic equipment and decoding Top Secret messages. This would range from Naval and Coast Guard Bases to ships and submarines that contained encryption equipment. Robert was a professional senior NCO who taught and mentored Junior Enlisted Sailors in the classroom and with hands on life experiences. He retired from Navy Oct 1, 1982.
After retiring from military service, he began a fulfilling career as a truck driver for Grigsby Produce. His dedication to the road and his work was second only to the love he had for his family. On August 11, 1956, he married Marilyn “Riggle” Grigsby in his hometown of Bruceville, marking the beginning of a cherished partnership that would span seven decades.
The bonds of family were of paramount importance to Robert. He is survived by his devoted wife, Marilyn Grigsby of Freelandville; his son, Timothy Grigsby (Angela) of Westphalia; his son-in-law, Mike Page, of Bicknell; and his three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Each family gathering was a testament to the legacy of love and strength he built and nurtured throughout his years.
Preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Grigsby and Velma “Butler” Hess, his step-father, Tony Hess, his daughters, Joni Grigsby and Terry Page, his granddaughter, Alicia Davidson, and his sisters, Doreen Caranhan and Jacqueline Koenig, Robert leaves behind many memories and lessons that will continue to guide and comfort his family.
Robert found joy in conversation and connections, enjoying every opportunity to visit and talk with his friends. He was an active member of the Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, the Vincennes American Legion, the Vincennes VFW, the Bicknell French Club, and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers’ Association. Each organization benefited from his commitment and camaraderie.
Robert Niles Grigsby’s storied life will be recounted with fondness and pride, leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate to cross his path. His well-lived life serves as both a comfort and a pillar for his family and friends, who will continue to honor his memory.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel. A service will follow at 12:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Bryan Sanders. Burial will conclude at Bruceville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to K.C.A.R.C.
