Betty Jane Coleman, a light in the lives of many, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, in Bloomington, Indiana. Born on October 2, 1953, in Washington, Indiana, Betty brought joy and creativity to the world for 72 years.
The beloved daughter of the late Carl D. Coleman and Grace Seidel Coleman, Betty inherited a passion for life and learning that she carried throughout her days. She grew beneath the steady care of her parents alongside her brother, John Coleman (Kathie) of Ellettsville, who survives her and will forever cherish her memory. Betty now joins her late sister, Margaret Ann Johnson, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication.
Betty’s journey in education began with her graduation from Washington High School in 1971. Never shying away from furthering her knowledge, she pursued higher education at Indiana University, where she achieved a Master’s Degree. Betty’s passion for art infused her long-standing career as an art teacher at Greenfield Central Community School, touching the lives of students in both Eden and Maxwell, Indiana, for over 37 years.
Her zest for her craft extended beyond the classroom as Betty was an active and devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was her faith that often inspired her art and guided her in her daily interactions with those around her.
Betty’s enthusiasm for drawing and art was contagious, spreading to all who knew her and leaving an indelible mark on the community. She was not only a teacher but also a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of unwavering support and inspiration.
She is fondly remembered by her adoring nieces, Julia A. Johnson and Sarah M. Armendariz, and her brother-in-law, James Lewis Johnson. These family members, along with her students, colleagues, and friends, will carry Betty’s spirit forward.
Betty Jane Coleman lived a life adorned with the beauty she created and shared. Her legacy will continue to sparkle in the hearts of those she taught and loved.
