Plans are being considered now for future use of the empty shell building on the Knox County Jail facility. The current plan is to convert three quarters of the empty facility into a new pod for inmates at the Knox County Jail.
The question is with the remaining quarter of the facility. One possibility is a new home for Knox County Central Dispatch—an idea that is a hard “no” from Knox County Commissioner Kellie Streeter. Other possible moves for that space include the Knox County Prosecutor’s office, and the Knox County Emergency Management Agency. Commissioners’ president T-J Brink wants to wait until building designer Garmong returns with space numbers.
The issue was discussed in yesterday’s Commissioners’ session. As part of that session, Streeter also brought up possible plans for the former Poor Farm facility on Hart Street Road. The original plan was for an Emergency Operations Center to be placed on the land, but that plan was shelved due to higher than expected cost.
