No second baseman hit more home runs than Jeff Kent and he’ll now take his place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame according to the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame has shared the news tonight that Jeff Kent will be enshrined as part of the class of 2026. He began his career with the New York Mets, but would also be a vital part of the San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers before his career ended in 2008. I recall more than once when Jeff Kent was a pain in the side of the St. Louis Cardinals. Stat Muse said he had a batting average of .285 with 146 hits, 22 homers, 92 RBIs and 76 runs scored in 137 games against St. Louis. His 377 home runs still tops all other second basemen. Jeff Kent also ended his career with a .290 batting average.
MLB.com is reporting that the rest of this year’s Contemporary Baseball Era ballot looked like this: Carlos Delgado received 9 votes, Dale Murphy and Don Mattingly ended up with 6 votes; Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield and Fernando Valenzuela each received less than 5 votes.
