David Edgar Smith, age 81, of Bicknell, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on the 12th of October 2025 surrounded by his family. Born on June 30, 1944, in Terre Haute, Indiana, he was the son of the late Eva Schott Heck and Wendall Smith. Known affectionately as David to his friends and loved ones, he led a fulfilling life marked by dedication, love, and service.
Throughout his life, David was known for his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to his family. He proudly served in the United States Army at Camp Century “The City Under the Ice” in Greenland. After that, he served as a police officer in Washington D.C. and a Correctional Officer with the Indiana Department of Corrections until his retirement in 2021 at the Carlisle facility. His dedication to his profession and the well-being of others left a lasting impact on those who worked alongside him and under his watch.
David’s life was one of partnership and family. He was married to Mary Jane on May 2, 1997, in Bicknell, Indiana. The couple made a beautiful life together, filled with love, support, and shared moments of happiness that created lifelong memories. David’s legacy lives on through his beloved family, including his devoted wife, Mary Jane; his son, David Smith Jr of Indianapolis; his two step-daughters, Amy Deckard (Mark) of Bicknell, and Angela Grigsby (Tim) of Westphalia; and his treasured granddaughters, Amanda Davidson of Freelandville and Chelsea Summers (Jason) of Bicknell. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Michael (Abby), Alison, Molly, and Gunner, and two great-great-granddaughters, each of whom he was so proud of.
In addition to his immediate family, David is mourned by numerous relatives, friends, and former colleagues who felt the impact of his kindness, wisdom, and good humor. David’s life was one of warmth and generosity, touching the lives of many and leaving a legacy that will not be forgotten. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now at peace.
David was preceded in death by his first wife, Diana, sisters, Marianne Hale, and Nancy Bice, a brother-in-law, Robert Gee, Sr., and a granddaughter, Alicia Davidson. These losses were deeply felt by David, and he carried their memory with him dearly.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the outpouring love and support during this time and will be honoring David’s wishes with a private ceremony.
