Joseph Mark Mathis, known affectionately as Mark to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, in Vincennes, Indiana, at the age of 68. Born on February 20, 1957, in Washington, Indiana, he was the cherished son of the late Virginia Ross Mathis and Charles Perry Mathis, who predeceased him.
Mark’s spirit of adventure and his love for the open road were evident in his dedication to a 30-year career as a truck driver. His commitment to his profession extended beyond the driver’s seat, as he was also well-known for his work with Harner Trucking, where he tirelessly loaded turkeys with a sense of duty and camaraderie. In every load and every mile, Mark carried with him a deep sense of responsibility and pride in his work.
Those who knew Mark will remember his passion for life and his diverse interests. He was an avid motorcycle rider, feeling most at home on two wheels with the wind in his face, exploring the country he loved so deeply. Nature held a special place in his heart, and he captured its beauty through his photography, creating a collection of images that reflected his deep appreciation for the world around him. His love of cars was evident to anyone who witnessed his knowledge and enthusiasm for every make and model. Mark also found joy in the culinary arts, never missing an opportunity to try different foods and share his discoveries with his loved ones.
A true animal lover, Mark’s kindness extended to all living creatures. His gentle manner and warmth were felt by all who had the privilege to cross his path, whether on two legs or four.
Mark’s legacy lives on through his loving family. He was a devoted father to his two sons, Robert Joseph Mathis of Evansville, and Joshua Mark Mathis of Washington. He leaves behind his loving wife, Heidi Mathis (Young) whom he was very devoted to. He also embraced his role as a stepfather to his step-daughters, Kiara Jones of Vincennes, Kayla Hernandez (married to Manuel) of Vincennes, and a step-son, Tyler Long (married to Jessica) of Vincennes; and fourteen grandchildren.Through his love and actions, he taught them the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the joy of life’s simple pleasures.
Mark’s passing leaves behind a void in the hearts of many, yet his vibrant spirit and the memories he made will forever remain a beacon of light for those who knew him. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his journey continues on roads untraveled and in the beauty of the nature he so adored. His life was a journey well-traveled, and his story will be told through the legacy of love, laughter, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
