Thomas Lee Powers, a cherished brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on July 29, 2025, at the age of 67 in Washington, Indiana, leaving a legacy filled with laughter, craftsmanship, and a profound love for his community. Born on February 6, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, Thomas navigated life’s challenges with strength and a smile. He grew up surrounded by the love of his family and embraced life’s joys and trials with grace.
Thomas graduated from the Indiana School for the Deaf, where he honed his resilience and determination. Throughout his life, these qualities shone brightly and were a testament to his adaptability and spirit. Upon graduation, he spent many years contributing his skills at the KCARC plant in Bicknell, Indiana, where he earned the respect of his colleagues and the wider community.
As an enthusiastic collector of Indiana artifacts, Thomas cherished the stories and history behind each find. His passion for old cars extended beyond mere interest, as he dedicated himself to collecting these beautiful machines. Thomas also had an impressive talent for refinishing furniture, transforming the old into beautiful treasures.
Thomas’s life was deeply rooted in Bicknell, as evidenced by his lifelong membership in the Bicknell French Club. His engagement with the club and its activities fostered a strong sense of belonging and offered an avenue for him to form many enduring friendships.
His memory will be held dear by his siblings Lori Petelle of Bicknell, IN, Tim Powers of Bicknell, IN, and Tammy Austin (Marty) of Washington, IN, along with several devoted nieces and nephews, who will carry on his spirit in their lives. Thomas was preceded in death by his loving parents, Ira “Bud” and Lorraine “Mulligan” Powers, and his dearly missed sister, Karen Westfall.
Thomas’s presence will be profoundly missed, yet his joyful personality and the stories he shared will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His life was a series of moments shared with loved ones, laughter that echoed in the rooms he graced, and the positive impact of his actions on those around him. Though Thomas Lee Powers may be gone, his legacy of humor, friendship, and community dedication will forever live on.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Bicknell Memorial Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Tom Watson.
