Charles Wesley Payne “Wes”, of Westphalia, IN, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 18, 2025, at the age of 71 in Jasper, IN, leaving a legacy of love and laughter.
Born on September 30, 1953, in Vincennes, IN, Charles was a man known for his humor, handiness, and heartfelt affection. Throughout his life, he cultivated roots in his community, sharing his passion for the outdoors and embodying the values held dear by those who knew him. After attending college, Charles dedicated himself to a career as an ammunition specialist, a role in which he demonstrated both skill and dedication.
Charles found his soulmate in Debra “Wimberly” Payne, and they were married on October 10, 1984, in Bicknell, IN. Their loving partnership was a foundation for the family, a home filled with laughter, where garden bounty, fish tales, and poker nights were shared with joy. Charles was a proud member of the Bicknell French Club and the Linton American Legion, where his sense of community and camaraderie shone brightly.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Debra, of Bicknell, IN; his children, Gary Goodwin of Oaktown, IN, Mike Ingram (Stacey) of Princeton, IN, John Ingram (Mercedes) of Edwardsport, IN, Jeremy Payne (Jessica) of Winslow, IN, Brian Payne (Lynne) of Hanson, KY, Jeanna Helpingstine (Kyle) of Freelandville, IN, and Samantha Hawkins (Leo) of Vincennes, IN; his much-adored 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his siblings Ruth Bryant (Max) of Orange Park, FL, Betty Racey of Bicknell, IN, and Zuella Stremming of Petersburg, IN; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Millard L. and Snowful L. “Riggle” Payne, along with his brothers John, Danny, and Art Payne, and his sisters Joann Hall, Ardella Smith, and Carolyn Payne.
In every role he held, from family man to community member, Charles Wesley Payne enriched the lives of others. As we bid farewell, we carry forward the warmth of his smile and the echo of his laughter, treasures that have left an indelible mark on our hearts. Charles’s memory will be held close, an enduring emblem of a life well-lived, beloved, and truly unforgettable.
There will be a memorial service hosted by Wes’s family on Thursday, July 24,2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Bicknell Memorial Gardens.
