The Indiana Department of Education says that in just two years, Indiana students ranked sixth in the nation in reading according to results from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress rankings.
That’s up from a ranking of 19th for fourth grade reading and is the highest Indiana has ever ranked in that grade level.
In 8th grade reading, Indiana went from 17th to 6th in the nation.
In 4th grade math, Indiana ranked 9th in the nation, up from 11th.
In 8th grade math, Indiana ranked 13th, down from 11th.
State education officials say the assessment, administered in 2024, shows that fourth and eighth grade students are outperforming their peers nationwide in reading and earned similar scores as their peers nationwide in math.
Across the nation, average scale scores in reading and math still have not recovered to pre-pandemic levels.
