Duke Energy Indiana received high marks in a national clean energy assessment, while two other Indiana utility companies scored no points. Overall, the six utilities in the state averaged a score of 44%, which is equivalent to a “C” grade, according to the Indiana Capital Chronicle.
The assessment evaluates 50 parent companies that own half of the nation’s fossil fuel generation and is conducted by the Sierra Club, a California-based environmental advocacy group. The evaluation uses metrics aligned with President Joe Biden’s goals for the U.S. to obtain 80% of its energy from emissions-free sources by 2030 and 100% by 2035.
One of Duke’s larger clean power endeavors is happening at the Edwardsport power plant. There, coal is turned into natural gas to fire that plant’s electric generation.
