The Knox County Commissioners have approved a plan to reallocate space on its property in the future. The move will include different phases; the first phase will tear down the old facility at 2830 Arc Avenue, and build a new Emergency Operations Center there. After that is complete, Central Dispatch, Emergency Operations, and the County Coroner’s office would be in that building.
After the Central Dispatch moves, the next phase would demolish the former Community Corrections Center would be torn down. It would then be replaced with a new Judicial Center, to house the County’s courts and the County Veterans’ office. Even though the Correctional Center will be torn down, the current Probation Department facility at 8th and Broadway will stay standing. The final phase would make around 150-thousand dollars in renovations to the current Knox County Courthouse, The planning and sitework would be engineered by architectural firm RQAW.
The proposal is considered the best use of the County’s funds to make the best use of the County’s available space. Further, the Commissioners say the funding to transform the facility on Arc Avenue is on hand.
The planning and site study will begin soon. No timetable is set yet for any of the phases of the approved work has been set.
